Construct Validity - Neo & Gordon's SIV

Once we have ascertained the reliability of a test, we must address its validity. It is important to know that the constructs we are measuring are valid, that it is indeed measuring the characteristic it purports to measure. The following data demonstrates that the dimensions of the 15FQ™ are consistent with similar measures of personality.

Relationship between 15FQ™ & NEO Short Form

A sample of 108 delegates on psychological assessment training courses completed both the 15FQ™ and the NEO short form developed by Costa and McCrae, the originators of the five factor theory. Whereas the correlations between the 15FQ™ and the Kline PPQ, (another 5 factor questionnaire) were only modest, some fairly substantial correlations were obtained with the NEO (see next table). The Neo Neuroticism scale is strongly correlated with 15FQ™ Calm-stable (r=-.66) and Self-doubting (r=.61) providing very good support for the Anxiety sub-scales of the 15FQ™. The NEO Extraversion factor correlates above 0.60 with all the 15FQ™ Extraversion sub-scales (Outgoing, Enthusiastic, Socially Bold and Self-sufficient). As far as Openness is concerned, 15FQ™ Conceptual correlates strongly (r=.62) with Radical, Enthusiastic and Intuitive showing some contribution. The relationships with the two remaining NEO factors are not quite as clear cut with correlations not quite as elevated as are observed with the first three (N, E & O). Agreeableness correlates with low scores on Suspicious and Assertive, whilst Conscientiousness correlates with 15FQ™ dimensions Conscientiousness and Calm-stable.

Relationship between 15FQ™ & Gordon's Survey of Interpersonal Values

A sample of 160 volunteers completed both the 15FQ™ and the Gordon's Survey of Interpersonal Values as part of a test validation exercise.

For the most part, the congruence between the SIV and 15FQ™ is fairly limited although a few meaningful patterns are observed. The SIV Support, Recognition and Benevolence scales appear to have very little overlap with 15FQ™ measures. SIV Conformity is positively related to 15FQ™ Disciplined and Conscientious and negatively to 15FQ™ scale Radical. This is consistent with the notion that an individual who has a highly conformist value system will tend to be conservative, Conscientious and Disciplined.
